INDIANA — In an effort to expand the state’s urban canopy while introducing young Hoosiers to careers in environmental science, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Community and Urban Forestry (CUF) program has officially launched the Teen and Young Professionals Tree Stewards initiative.
Detailed as a key strategic objective in Indiana’s State Forest Action Plan, the new statewide program pairs CUF with municipal parks departments and urban forestry non-profits to provide specialized, hands-on training tailored for high school teens and young adults.
The primary mission of the initiative is to build fundamental arborist skills and create clear pathways toward green careers. Participants undergo interactive instruction covering a range of forestry essentials, including:
- Tree Identification and Measurement: Learning how to identify native Indiana species and measure tree health and volume.
- Urban Canopy Science: Understanding the economic, ecological, and stormwater management benefits of urban forests.
- Young Tree Maintenance: Mastering proper planting, mulching, watering, and structural pruning techniques.
- Leadership Development: Cultivating team-building and professional leadership skills applicable to natural resource management.
Early Success with Regional Partners
The inaugural phase of the program is already showing strong momentum. CUF reported that its first two workshops—conducted in partnership with West Lafayette Parks and Recreation AmeriCorps and the Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Youth Tree Tenders—were highly successful.
To date, 37 young participants have successfully graduated from the curriculum.
State urban forestry officials credited early community support for the smooth rollout, extending formal recognition to regional training partners and the Indiana Arborist Association for providing ongoing technical support, instruction, and industry mentorship.
CUF plans to expand the Teen and Young Professionals Tree Stewards curriculum to additional municipal forestry programs, youth conservation corps, and school groups across Indiana throughout the coming year.
