Mars Petcare issues recall on Pedigree wet dog food over fraudulent distribution and foreign material risks

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Mars Petcare US, Inc. has announced a voluntary recall for two specific lots of PEDIGREE® Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor wet dog food (13.2 oz cans). The recall comes after the company discovered that products designated for destruction had been fraudulently diverted and sold into the U.S. marketplace.

According to the company announcement, published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on July 2, 2026, the affected lots failed to meet Mars and Pedigree quality standards and were sent to a third-party vendor to be destroyed. Instead, the product was illegally distributed into retail channels.

Health Risks and Foreign Material Contamination

Mars Petcare warns that the recalled cans may contain hard and sharp pieces of metal and plastic foreign material. Ingesting these sharp objects poses severe health risks to pets, ranging from choking and oral lacerations to dangerous blockages or punctures within the gastrointestinal tract.

While Mars Petcare is actively working with law enforcement and regulatory authorities to investigate how the compromised pet food entered the marketplace, the company confirmed it has received zero reports of pet illness or injury related to this issue so far.
