Indiana Gas prices plunge nearly 17 cents as National average drops ahead of summer travel

INDIANA Hoosier drivers are receiving some much-needed relief at the pump this week. Average gasoline prices in Indiana have fallen 16.9 cents per gallon over the last week, settling at an average of $3.03 per gallon today, according to the latest GasBuddy survey of 3,271 stations across the state.

The recent drop means current prices in Indiana are now 40.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 6.5 cents per gallon lower than this time last year.

According to real-time price reports tracked by GasBuddy, the lowest price recorded in the state yesterday was $2.58 per gallon, while the highest reached $5.09 per gallon — representing a substantial spread of $2.51 per gallon between the cheapest and most expensive stations.

Regionally, average prices vary noticeably across neighboring areas:

  • Indianapolis: $2.94 per gallon, down 18.0 cents from last week’s $3.12 per gallon.
  • Cincinnati: $3.46 per gallon, down 25.3 cents from last week’s $3.71 per gallon.
  • Champaign: $3.67 per gallon, down 18.7 cents from last week’s $3.86 per gallon.

On the national stage, the average price of gasoline fell 6.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.71 per gallon today. While the national average has dipped 41.3 cents per gallon over the last month, it still stands 62.7 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. Meanwhile, the national average price of diesel decreased by 11.8 cents compared to a week ago, sitting at $4.758 per gallon.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, noted that while pump prices are dropping, global events are keeping them from falling as quickly as raw crude oil values.

Patrick De Haan

“Average gasoline prices fell in nearly every state over the last week, with diesel declining in all 50, pushing the national average to approximately $3.74 per gallon this July 4 — the third most expensive Independence Day on record, but well off the peak of $4.57 per gallon seen in May,” De Haan said.

De Haan explained that geopolitical conflicts are directly squeezing the market. “Continued Ukrainian attacks on Russian refinery infrastructure have forced Russia to shift from fuel exporter to importer, tightening global supplies and putting upward pressure on crack spreads — explaining why pump prices haven’t fallen as sharply as oil prices might suggest. Until the refining supply picture improves, significant further drops at the pump may be limited.”

Current fuel costs represent a sharp decline from the record-breaking highs recorded during the post-pandemic inflation spike of 2022, bringing Indiana closer to standard historical baselines:
