IU Health announces return of ‘Camp Good Grief’ to support children navigating loss

BLOOMINGTON Facing the loss of a loved one is a profound challenge at any stage of life, but for children and teens, navigating that sorrow can feel uniquely isolating. To help young people process these complex emotions, Indiana University Health has announced the return of Camp Good Grief for 2026.

The free, half-day program is specifically designed to guide grieving hearts and provide a safe space for youth ages 6 to 16 who have lost someone special.

Understanding the Burden on Young Hearts

After a major loss, children often struggle with overwhelming thoughts and a sense of alienation. According to organizers, it is common for grieving youth to feel like they will never feel happy again or that no one truly understands what they are going through. Furthermore, they may feel isolated because they don’t know any other peers experiencing a similar loss, or they might feel that the adults in their lives are too consumed by their own grief to help.

Camp Good Grief is structured specifically to address these heavy emotional burdens. By integrating creative outlets like art, music, and play, the camp helps children:

  • Connect with peers who are also experiencing loss.
  • Develop positive, healthy coping skills.
  • Learn how to preserve precious memories and honor their loved ones.

While the program is completely free of charge, participation is strictly limited to 45 campers to ensure personalized attention and a supportive environment.
