70-year-old man dies after collapsing in Holiday World’s Thanksgiving section

SANTA CLAUS — A family’s summer outing turned into a tragedy when a 70-year-old man collapsed and later died while visiting the Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari theme park.

The Dubois County Coroner’s Office officially confirmed the death following the medical emergency, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

According to park officials, the guest suddenly collapsed while walking through the Thanksgiving section of the theme park—an area known for hosting popular attractions like The Voyage wooden roller coaster and the Gobbler Getaway. Seeing him fall, the man’s family immediately sprang into action, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a desperate attempt to revive him until emergency personnel could reach the scene.

Holiday World’s on-site Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) arrived shortly after the medical alert was triggered to take over life-saving measures. The man was rapidly loaded into an ambulance and transported to Deaconess Memorial Hospital.

Despite the quick intervention of his family and professional first responders, the Dubois County Coroner’s Office confirmed the man was pronounced dead at the medical facility.

Authorities withheld the man’s identity to ensure his extended family could be properly notified. Representatives for Holiday World expressed their deep condolences to the family, asking the public to keep the guest’s loved ones in their thoughts.

The tragic event highlights the importance of rapid-response medical protocols in large amusement parks. Holiday World maintains a fully staffed, dedicated first-aid station with certified EMTs stationed throughout the park operating hours to address everything from heat exhaustion to severe cardiac events.

Officials have not yet confirmed if the extreme summer heat or a pre-existing medical issue contributed to the 70-year-old man’s sudden collapse. An official cause of death is pending a final review by the Dubois County Coroner.
