LCCF Grants empower local wellness and sobriety programs

BEDFORD The Lawrence County Community Foundation (LCCF) has announced the distribution of its latest round of Health and Well-Being Grants, providing crucial financial backing to grassroots initiatives targeted at physical health and addiction recovery across the region.

The funding cycle aims to lower socioeconomic barriers to vital human services, ensuring Lawrence County residents have access to the resources required to live stable, healthy lives. Among this year’s prominent beneficiaries are Purdue Extension Lawrence County and the Serenity Club of Bedford, both of which have utilized the capital injection to expand targeted public outreach.

Combating Heart Disease in the Kitchen

Purdue Extension leveraged its grant allocation to underwrite its flagship “Be Heart Smart” program—a comprehensive, four-session educational series designed to proactively reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease through actionable lifestyle changes.

Recognizing that nutritional education is only effective if participants have access to the proper ingredients, the grant fully funded customized meal kits containing fresh, whole ingredients and detailed “how-to” recipe cards distributed at each weekly session.

The hands-on approach proved particularly vital for a recently widowed resident who attended the program. Transitioning to living alone, the attendee utilized the course not just to learn heart-healthy parameters, but to master fundamental culinary skills from scratch. Extension coordinators noted he proudly returned to subsequent sessions to share the success of his first independently prepared dinners.

Expanding 60 Years of Recovery Infrastructure

Simultaneously, the grant cycle has provided essential operational support to the Serenity Club, a foundational pillar of Bedford’s recovery network located on Washington Avenue. For over six decades, the organization has sponsored critical Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings, operating as a localized sanctuary for individuals navigating rehabilitation.

The Serenity Club’s programming acts as a vital diversionary and rehabilitative asset for individuals actively working within the Lawrence County judicial system.

The newly injected LCCF capital not only secures the continuation of these mandatory adult recovery services but also has successfully funded a major structural expansion: the introduction of dedicated recovery and support meetings specifically tailored for youth under the age of 18. Local coordinators emphasize that addressing substance use and behavioral health early within a secure peer environment is a major step toward breaking generational cycles of addiction in the community.

Non-profit organizations, educational groups, and municipal entities seeking to apply for future LCCF grant cycles can find eligibility rules and submission deadlines online at the Community Foundation Partnership portal.
