Indiana Genealogical Society names John W. Verheul as Lawrence County genealogist

BEDFORD The Indiana Genealogical Society (IGS) has announced an expansion of its flagship Indiana County Genealogist program with the official appointment of Bedford resident John W. Verheul to serve as the resident expert for Lawrence County. Verheul’s appointment was formally reviewed and confirmed by the society’s Board of Directors.

John W. Verheul

In this targeted local role, Verheul will serve as the primary strategic anchor coordinating genealogical activities and public records access across the county line. His duties include bridging collaborations between the statewide society and regional historical chapters, public archives, and private collectors. Additionally, he will operate as the central point of contact for both local and out-of-state researchers attempting to navigate complex family lineages rooted in Lawrence County’s history.

Deep Roots in Community Preservation

Verheul steps into the role with a highly specialized background in local historical preservation. For years, he has served as a core research volunteer at the Edward L. Hutton Genealogical Research Library, housed inside the Lawrence County Museum of History. He also sits on the Bedford Public Library Committee, aiding in the strategic oversight and long-term management of public library systems.

Beyond his volunteer efforts, Verheul leverages a unique professional background that translates directly into archival precision. His decades of experience managing large-scale projects as a civilian contractor for the United States Navy have equipped him with a strict methodology for organization, record verification, and data integrity. Local officials note that these foundational skills are critical when handling fragile historic documents and solving complex historical timelines.

“His decades of project management experience bring a standard of precision and reliability that is invaluable when handling delicate archival materials and maintaining accurate historical records.” — Indiana Genealogical Society

Uncovering Local History

Verheul has already been heavily involved in documenting local architecture. He recently completed extensive, property-by-property background research on historic Bedford residences to map out an official Historic District Walking Tour. His final architectural and genealogical findings were published by the Lawrence County Historical and Genealogical Society (LCHGS).

With his official appointment active, remote researchers, family historians, and residents seeking assistance with Lawrence County records are encouraged to connect with Verheul through the standard Indiana Genealogical Society county networks.
