Columbus Police identify victim in fatal Wedgewood Drive shooting

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Authorities have released the identity of a Columbus man who was shot and killed outside a residence on the city’s east side Monday morning, June 22, 2026.

The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as 44-year-old David R. Young.

According to the Columbus Police Department, first responders were dispatched to a home in the 3000 block of Wedgewood Drive, located near Taylor Road and 25th Street, at approximately 9:06 a.m.

The emergency response was triggered by a 911 call from a resident at the home. The caller told dispatchers that he had just shot a man who had allegedly attacked him.

Upon arriving at the scene, police and medical personnel located Young outside the residence suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers secured the area and immediately began rendering emergency first aid. Despite life-saving efforts, Young was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives and crime scene investigators spent much of Monday gathering evidence and interviewing those involved. A preliminary timeline of the morning’s events has begun to emerge:

Investigators confirmed that Young was known to the residents of the Wedgewood Drive home. Young drove himself to the house on Monday morning. Shortly after his arrival, a physical fight or altercation broke out near the front door of the home. During the struggle, the resident fired the fatal shots.

The caller who reported the shooting remained at the residence and cooperated with arriving officers.

As of Tuesday, no arrests have been made, and no formal charges have been filed against the shooter.

A forensic autopsy has been scheduled by the Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Columbus Police officials emphasize that the case remains a very active investigation. Detectives are continuing to interview potential witnesses and review forensic evidence. Once the department’s final investigation report is complete, all findings will be handed over to the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office for a full review to determine whether the shooting was a justifiable act of self-defense or if criminal charges are warranted.

Anyone with additional information regarding this incident or who may have witnessed events leading up to the altercation is urged to contact the Columbus Police Department at 812-376-2600.
