SEYMOUR — The City of Seymour is inviting the community to beat the summer heat while celebrating a massive milestone in American history. On Sunday, residents can dive into the national spirit during a free, patriotic-themed pool party hosted in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The special semiquincentennial event will take place from noon to 5:00 p.m. on June 21, at the Shields Park Pool, located at 703 N. Park Street.

To mark the country’s historic 250th birthday, city organizers are waiving the standard entry fees, offering free admission to all visitors for the duration of the five-hour celebration. The afternoon will feature a lineup of patriotic music playing throughout the facility, along with special themed giveaways for attendees. Members of the public are highly encouraged to show their community and national pride by wearing red, white, and blue swimwear or apparel to the park.
Seymour’s upcoming pool party is part of a broader, year-long effort across Indiana to commemorate the U.S. semiquincentennial. Throughout 2026, the Indiana USA 250 Committee, alongside the Indiana State Museum, Indiana Humanities, and various local municipalities, has been rolling out public programming to explore the state’s distinct connections to the American story.
While many statewide initiatives focus heavily on historical markers, cemetery walks honoring Revolutionary War patriots, and museum exhibits, Seymour’s event offers a relaxed, family-friendly environment for neighbors to gather locally and reflect on the national anniversary.
The patriotic bash also gives local families an opportunity to enjoy the ongoing upgrades at Seymour’s historic destination. Originally established in 1852 by town founder Meedy Shields, Shields Park is the city’s oldest public park, and its 50-meter Olympic-sized pool has served as a cornerstone for summer recreation for decades.
Earlier this year, the Seymour Parks and Recreation Board launched a major $3.9 million multi-phase renovation project to revitalize the facility, which had not seen major infrastructural updates since 1991.
According to city officials, the first phase of construction was completed ahead of the May 2026 opening. Swimmers attending Sunday’s party will benefit from a completely overhauled, modern water filtration and mechanical system, a freshly painted pool floor, and brand-new competitive starting blocks, diving boards, and lifeguard chairs.
A second, highly anticipated round of construction is scheduled to begin this August after the summer season concludes. That phase will bring “the fun stuff” for the 2027 season, including an entirely new children’s activity pool, a modern concessions area, a dedicated party rental space, and a new water slide.
