LAKE COUNTY – Formal criminal charges have been filed against a Hammond man in connection with a violent highway shooting that took place last week on Interstate 80/94, authorities announced.

Jaymiere Isryael Johnson, 25, faces multiple felony charges filed by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office on June 12. The charges stem from an ongoing investigation into a suspected road rage incident that left one man hospitalized
- Aggravated battery – Level 3 felony
- Battery by means of a deadly weapon – Level 5 felony
- Battery resulting in serious bodily injury – Level 5 felony
Highway Dispute Escalates to Gunfire
The incident began on June 8th, during the evening rush hour at approximately 5:45 p.m., when Indiana State Police troopers responded to reports of a shooting inside a vehicle near the Burr Street exit on I-80 westbound.
Preliminary findings indicate that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Investigators believe the encounter was triggered by a road rage dispute between two drivers that escalated as both vehicles were exiting the interstate onto Burr Street.
The victim, who was the sole occupant of an orange Jeep Wrangler, was struck by gunfire while stopped at a traffic light at the top of the Burr Street exit ramp.
Victim Sought Help at Nearby Casino
Following the shooting, the wounded driver managed to navigate his vehicle to the nearby Hard Rock Casino off Burr Street to seek emergency medical assistance. Responding troopers located the victim and his vehicle at the casino property.
State Police explicitly noted that the shooting itself did not occur at the Hard Rock Casino, dispelling a wave of speculative rumors that had been circulating online.
The victim was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Authorities confirm he is currently in stable condition.
Detectives assigned to the Indiana State Police Lowell Post Investigations Bureau were assisted by the Gary Police Department and the Gary Police Real Time Crime Center, whose efforts were instrumental in identifying the suspect in this investigation. Detectives also want to recognize Trooper Jace Haddon, who also responded to the scene of the traffic stop while off-duty, and assisted throughout this investigation during the last three days.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent until proven guilty through a fair and due legal process. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
