MITCHELL — Authorities in southern Indiana are searching for a driver who fled the scene after striking and seriously injuring a 14-year-old scooter rider Friday afternoon in Mitchell.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:40 p.m. in the area of 903 W. Brook St., according to an urgent public alert released by the Mitchell Police Department.
Investigators believe the juvenile was struck by a gray, four-door sedan that immediately left the area without stopping to provide aid or report the collision.
The victim, whose identity has not been publicly released due to their age, sustained severe injuries in the crash. Information regarding the juvenile’s current medical status or the hospital where they are receiving treatment was not immediately available.
Local law enforcement officials are actively appealing to the public for assistance. Residents and businesses located in the immediate vicinity of Brook Street and 9th Street are being asked to review security cameras, doorbell monitors, or dashcam systems for any footage captured around the time of the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, with the Mitchell Police Department coordinating efforts alongside regional dispatch units.
