Steve Joe Walters, 77, of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2026, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born April 8, 1949, in Lawrence County, he was the son of William O. and Lois May (Miller) Walters. Steve married Norma Ann Gould on July 11, 1970. He was a heavy equipment operator for Black Beauty Coal Co. in Washington, Indiana. He was of the Christian faith. Steve was an avid outdoorsman; he loved camping – especially during Halloween at Spring Mill, where he won several awards for his handmade Halloween decorations.
Steven enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, and doing yard work. After retirement, he loved to tinker in the garage. Steve loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Norma, of Bedford; daughter, Christie (Ronnie) Cook of Bedford; two granddaughters, Hayleigh (Adler) Ramsay and Macie Cook; two great-grandchildren, Wesley Byford and Vivian Ramsay; sister-in-law, Marilyn Borders; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Willow.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Iris Jean Terry, Evelyn Walters, and Martha Jewell Walters, and a brother, Raymond Walters.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 28th, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary, with Rick Leach officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27th, at Day & Carter Mortuary.
