INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Mike Braun today joined the Indiana State Police to urge Hoosiers to drive safely and avoid impaired driving over the Memorial Day weekend, one of the busiest travel periods of the year on Indiana roads.
“Memorial Day weekend is one of the best times to be a Hoosier—the Indianapolis 500, cookouts, and the time we take to honor those who gave their lives serving our country. Drinking and driving is dangerous every day of the year, but during a holiday weekend, the danger is magnified. Indiana State Police and local law enforcement will be stepping up enforcement to keep Hoosiers safe.” – Governor Mike Braun
During last year’s Memorial Day holiday period, 1,817 crashes occurred statewide. A total of 418 people were injured, and seven people lost their lives. Ninety-five of those crashes involved alcohol or drugs.
Enforcement will be stepped up across the state throughout the holiday weekend, building on the Indiana State Police’s work this year to keep Hoosiers safe on the roads. Through the first four months of 2026, ISP troopers have made more than 65,000 traffic arrests, an increase of nearly 7 percent over the same period last year. OWI arrests are up 2.5 percent, with 1,455 impaired drivers already taken off Indiana roads in 2026.
Statewide fatal crashes are down 22 percent compared with this same period last year, and traffic fatalities are down nearly 19 percent.
Governor Braun thanked the Troopers and all police across the state who will be working this weekend so that Hoosiers can enjoy a safe Indy 500 and Memorial Day weekend.
