BLOOMINGTON — Heavy rainfall over the past week has triggered high-water conditions across the region, heavily impacting local recreation areas just ahead of the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend.
According to Monroe Lake officials, the reservoir’s watershed has absorbed more than 5 inches of rainfall within a 72-hour window. Because it typically takes three to five days for the majority of regional rainfall runoff to flow through the watershed and reach the reservoir, the lake is continuing to experience delayed inflows from earlier storm systems.

As of 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2026, the reservoir water level has risen rapidly to 549.75 feet. This measurement puts the lake 11.75 feet above its normal pool level, marking a significant three-foot spike since Monday. With another rain system forecast to move through Southern Indiana from Friday through Sunday, park management anticipates the water level will continue to rise.
Park officials urge the public to remember the lake’s primary engineering purpose during these conditions. Monroe Lake is actively fulfilling its role as a flood control reservoir by holding back excess water to minimize flooding impacts on downstream homes, agricultural fields, and businesses.
Memorial Day Weekend Facility & Amenity Impacts
While the reservoir remains open, the high water has caused widespread disruptions, road closures, and changes to state recreation areas (SRAs):
Swimming Beaches & Day-Use Areas
- Beaches Closed: The popular swimming beaches at both Paynetown SRA and Fairfax SRA are completely submerged and will NOT open for the holiday weekend. Due to the high water volume, these beaches will remain closed until at least mid-June.
- Activity Center: The Paynetown SRA Activity Center will remain closed until further notice.
- Fishing Piers: Dedicated public fishing piers at both Paynetown SRA and Cutright SRA are entirely underwater and inaccessible.
Boat Ramps, Docks, and Marinas
- Cutright SRA: The main boat ramp is officially closed. However, boaters can utilize the specialized high-water boat ramp at Cutright, which remains fully operational.
- Pinegrove SRA: The boat ramp is open for the time being, but water has started creeping across the main access road. Boaters are urged to exercise extreme caution as water rises.
- Courtesy Docks: Accessible courtesy docks are currently limited to the Paynetown and Fairfax SRA boat ramps. Boaters should note that if the water continues its upward trajectory, these docks may become temporarily inaccessible until park staff can physically adjust their anchor positions.
- Paynetown Marina Shuttle: Due to the peninsula road being completely underwater, the boat shuttle for the Paynetown Marina has relocated its operations. The shuttle is now running directly out of the non-electric campground loop. Patrons must utilize this shuttle to access both marina docks and mooring buoys.
Hiking Trails & Road Closures
- Submerged Trails: Portions of the Tree Trek Trail (Paynetown SRA), as well as the Osprey Trail and Homestead Trail (Fairfax SRA) are underwater. Hikers should be prepared to turn back or drastically alter their routes.
- Local Road Closures: Authorities have closed several low-lying thoroughfares surrounding the lake:
- McGowan Road (including all vehicle and pedestrian access to the Stillwater Marsh observation platform).
- Friendship Road (from the hunter check station to Gross Road).
- Stipp Road (on the east side of Cartop SRA).
Looking Ahead: Potential Cutright Escalation
Monroe Lake management warns that if the reservoir level surpasses the 550-foot mark (12 feet above normal pool), the access road leading to Two Herons Marina at Cutright SRA will be forced to close due to flooding. If this threshold is crossed, marina slips patrons and boat rental customers will need to contact the marina management directly for emergency alternative access instructions.
Private Businesses and Federal Lands Open
Despite the state-managed closures, all privately owned and operated entities on the water remain OPEN for holiday weekend business. This includes Two Herons Marina, Lake Monroe Boat Rental, Lake Monroe Sailing Association, and the Fourwinds Lakeside Inn and Marina. Visitors holding private reservations or watercraft rentals should proceed with their scheduled plans.
Jurisdiction Note: State managers remind holiday visitors that they do not oversee the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area or the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area / Hoosier National Forest. Because these are federal properties managed by the U.S. Forest Service, campers and hikers should contact the Hoosier National Forest office directly for flood updates concerning those specific campgrounds and trails.
Resources for Visitors
- Live Water Levels: Real-time reservoir water levels are updated every 15 minutes by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at water.noaa.gov/gauges/MONI3.
- Weekend Programs: Interpretive activities and public programs are still being offered, though many locations have been shifted to dry land. The full weekend schedule can be viewed on the Monroe Lake Facebook Events Page
