Coroner rules fatal Allen County crash following police pursuit a suicide

ALLEN COUNTY A police pursuit that began as a welfare check ended in a fatal crash on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, after the driver suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials confirmed.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has completed its initial investigation into the incident, listing the driver’s cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head and officially ruling the case a suicide.

According to reports from the Indiana State Police (ISP), the incident began just after 12:15 p.m. when troopers overheard radio traffic concerning an individual who was believed to be armed and contemplating self-harm. The initial report indicated the individual was driving toward Columbia City.

A short time later, ISP troopers spotted a vehicle matching the description on US 30 near County Road 300 East in Whitley County. When troopers activated their emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop and check on the driver’s welfare, the driver refused to pull over.

The driver fled eastbound on US 30, crossing the county line into Allen County. State police units pursued the vehicle under the assumption that the driver was potentially armed, and their intent was unknown.

During the pursuit, the driver sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound, which caused the vehicle to leave the right side of the roadway and strike a tree near the intersection of US 30 and Butt Road.

Medical personnel pronounced the driver—the vehicle’s sole occupant—dead at the scene. The identity of the driver has been determined by the Allen County Coroner’s Office, and any further inquiries regarding the identity are being directed to their department.

The investigation into the incident remains active.
