High water levels impact Monroe Lake ahead of Memorial Day weekend: Beaches closed, multiple trails and roads underwater

BLOOMINGTON — As one of the biggest outdoor recreation weekends of the year approaches, visitors heading to Monroe Lake for Memorial Day will face significant disruptions due to high water levels.

Monroe Lake is a designated flood control reservoir, meaning its primary purpose is to hold excess water to protect downstream homes, businesses, and agricultural land. Fulfilling this critical function after recent heavy rains has forced park management to temporarily close or restrict access to multiple recreational facilities.

State park officials released an official advisory detailing the widespread impacts across the reservoir as of May 18, 2026.

Major Disruptions: Holiday Beach Closures

The most significant impact on holiday weekend plans involves the lake’s popular swimming areas.

  • Paynetown and Fairfax SRAs: The swimming beaches at both State Recreation Areas (SRAs) will NOT open for Memorial Day weekend. Both locations are completely submerged.
  • Timeline: Officials confirmed the beaches will remain closed through at least the end of May. No definitive predictions can be made for June until regional water levels begin to recede.

Boat Ramps, Fishing Piers, and Trails

While boaters can still get on the water, certain access points and shore-lined amenities have been heavily affected:

  • Boat Ramps: The main boat ramp at Cutright SRA is closed. However, the specialized high-water boat ramp at Cutright remains fully operational. All other boat ramps around the reservoir are currently open.
  • Fishing Piers: The public fishing piers at both Paynetown and Cutright SRAs are completely inaccessible due to high water.
  • Hiking Trails: Hikers should prepare to reroute or turn back. Sections of the Tree Trek Trail (Paynetown SRA), as well as the Osprey Trail and Homestead Trail (Fairfax SRA), are currently underwater.

Local Road Closures

Several key thoroughfares and access roads around the property have been closed to vehicle traffic due to flooding:

  • McGowan Road: Closed, which includes all access to the Stillwater Marsh observation platform.
  • Friendship Road: Closed from the hunter check station to Gross Road.
  • Stipp Road: Closed on the east side of the Cartop SRA.

Marinas and Private Resorts Remain Open

Despite the state-managed closures, private businesses operating on the reservoir are unaffected and ready for holiday weekend traffic.

The privately owned and operated Two Herons Marina, Lake Monroe Boat Rental, Lake Monroe Sailing Association, and Fourwinds Lakeside Inn and Marina all remain OPEN for business. Visitors holding reservations or renting watercraft through these entities should proceed with their plans.

Federal Land Management Reminder

Monroe Lake officials remind the public that state managers do not oversee the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area or the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area / Hoosier National Forest. Because these are federal properties managed by the U.S. Forest Service, visitors must contact the Hoosier National Forest office directly to inquire about specific flood impacts on those campgrounds and trails.
