Floodwaters force temporary closure of Griffy Lake Boathouse and restrooms

BLOOMINGTON — Heavy rainfall and rising water levels have forced the temporary closure of key facilities at Griffy Lake. Effective Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the Griffy Lake Boathouse and its surrounding public restrooms are closed to all visitors until further notice.

Park officials announced the closure after rising lake waters completely overtook the entrance to the boathouse launch area, making safe operations impossible. The facilities will remain locked until the floodwaters have a chance to properly recede.

High Water Levels Threaten Trail System

The flooding has severely impacted the surrounding recreational areas. As of 8:00 a.m. this morning, water levels had risen dramatically, nearly cresting over the popular causeway trail.

While the main parking lot remains dry and free of standing water for the time being, city officials are urging the public to stay alert.

Safety Information for Visitors

  • Closed Facilities: The Boathouse, boat launch entrance, and public restrooms.
  • Open Areas: The parking lot remains open, though conditions are subject to change.
  • Caution Advised: Visitors choosing to hike or visit the nature preserve are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution, stay away from submerged pathways, and avoid the edge of the fast-moving water.

Park maintenance and safety personnel will continue to monitor the water levels throughout the week. Updates regarding the recession of the water and the official reopening of the boathouse launch will be shared as conditions improve.
