BEDFORD – A Springville man was arrested Thursday in connection with a April 22 bar fight in Bedford that allegedly left another man unconscious, according to a Lawrence County affidavit.

Joseph Kent Garland, 51, was arrested on a charge of battery resulting in serious bodily injury.
According to an affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer Michael Bell, officers responded on April 22 to a reported fight at a local establishment in Bedford. Upon arrival, Bell and Officer Hamilton spoke with witnesses and collected statements related to the incident.
Investigators said witness statements indicated a dispute during a pool game escalated when Garland allegedly struck another man in the face with a closed fist, causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness.
The affidavit states the victim also provided a recorded statement and signed a battery affidavit. Officers reported the victim was evaluated on scene and declined further medical treatment.
Police later obtained security camera footage that allegedly showed two men playing pool before one man struck the other without physical provocation, according to the affidavit.
Garland was arrested on May 14 following the investigation and warrant request.
Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
