LINTON — Greene County General Hospital (GCGH) has officially issued a second breach of contract notice to Anthem, citing ongoing and unresolved issues regarding claim payments. The notice follows months of investigation by hospital officials into why specific claims were not being processed or paid according to their contractual agreement.

This latest move escalates a long-standing dispute between the local healthcare provider and the insurance giant.
The hospital had previously issued an initial breach notice to Anthem regarding similar payment concerns. According to GCGH leadership, Anthem has failed to “cure” that first breach and has not fully mitigated the resulting financial impact on the hospital’s operations.
The second notice, issued on May 14, introduces further complications, including:
- Continued Payment Errors: Specific concerns regarding Anthem’s systemic claim payment practices.
- Contractual Non-Compliance: A failure to correctly apply terms and rates outlined in the hospital’s standing contract.
- Ongoing Financial Impact: The unresolved nature of these payments continues to affect the hospital’s financial stability.
The friction between GCGH and Anthem reflects a broader trend across Indiana, where rural hospitals often face significant administrative hurdles in securing timely reimbursements from major insurers. For independent facilities like Greene County General, consistent cash flow is critical for maintaining staffing levels and providing specialized services to the community.
GCGH officials noted that they have spent months attempting to work through these issues with Anthem before resorting to the second formal breach notice.
While the hospital is currently locked in this administrative and legal struggle with the insurer, officials have not indicated any immediate changes to patient care or provider networks. However, sustained financial disputes of this nature can eventually force hospitals to reassess their contractual relationships with insurers to protect their ability to serve residents.
Anthem has not yet publicly responded to the second breach notice issued by the hospital.
