Schneck Medical Center opens registration for free “Safe Sitter” summer classes

SEYMOUR – As summer break approaches, Schneck Medical Center is offering local middle schoolers the opportunity to gain essential life-saving skills through its annual Safe Sitter program.

Signups are officially underway for the free, one-day courses designed to prepare young babysitters to handle emergencies and provide high-quality care for infants and children.

The goal of the Safe Sitter program is to teach safe babysitting and life skills to children entering grades 6-8.

The Safe Sitter curriculum is taught by specially trained team members from Schneck Medical Center. The lessons provide a medical basis for childcare, ensuring sitters are up to date on the latest safety protocols. Participants will learn:

  • Life and Safety Skills: Practical tools for managing emergencies.
  • Child Care Essentials: Tips for feeding, diapering, and entertaining children.
  • Business Skills: Professionalism and responsibility for young sitters.

The program is open to students entering sixth through eighth grades. Each class runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is limited to just 12 students to ensure personalized instruction. Because of the small class sizes, hospital officials note that sessions tend to fill up very quickly.

While the first session kicks off on Friday, June 5th, and Saturday, June 6th at the medical center, several other regional locations will host classes throughout the summer to serve families in surrounding counties.

How to Register

There is no cost to attend the program, but registration is required. Parents and guardians can find the complete summer schedule and secure a spot for their student by visiting schneckmed.org.

By providing these tools to local youth, Schneck Medical Center aims to increase community safety and empower the next generation of caregivers with the confidence they need to succeed.
