Hoosier Uplands awards grant to Washington County Sheriff’s Department for new sidearms

SALEM The Washington County Sheriff’s Department will soon upgrade its tactical equipment thanks to a $16,000 grant from the Hoosier Uplands Economic Development Corporation. The funds are earmarked for the purchase of new Glock 9mm pistols, providing local law enforcement officers with modernized sidearms to enhance public safety.

In a statement following the award, representatives from Hoosier Uplands expressed deep gratitude for the department’s service, noting that the nonprofit is proud to offer financial support to the men and women in uniform.

Expanding the Mission: Beyond Law Enforcement

While this grant directly impacts public safety, it is part of a broader “Community and Public Service” initiative managed by Hoosier Uplands. The Southern Indiana nonprofit is well-known for its comprehensive social services across Lawrence, Martin, Orange, Washington, and Crawford counties.

In addition to supporting police and fire departments with equipment, the corporation manages a wide array of programs, including:

  • Aging and Disability Services: Providing in-home care, Case Management, and “The Angel Foundation” to assist seniors in maintaining safe living environments.

  • Health and Children’s Services: Administering Head Start programs for early childhood development and providing WIC services in select counties.
  • Financial Empowerment: Offering free budget and housing counseling to help residents manage financial obligations and avoid mortgage defaults.
