Multiple men hospitalized after suspected drug poisoning at Kilroy’s Sports Bar

BLOOMINGTON A night out at a popular downtown venue took a dangerous turn late Thursday when five men were rushed to the hospital following a suspected drug overdose.

The Bloomington Police Department (BPD) confirmed that the incident occurred at Kilroy’s Sports Bar on Walnut Street. Emergency responders arrived at a chaotic scene just before midnight on April 30, discovering a group of men suffering from severe adverse reactions to an unknown substance.

According to police reports, the situation was split between the interior and exterior of the establishment:

Two of the men were found either unconscious or semi-conscious in the alleyway behind the bar.

Three additional men were located inside, all exhibiting symptoms of a drug-induced medical emergency.

All five individuals were transported via ambulance to IU Health Bloomington Hospital. As of Friday afternoon, hospital officials and police confirmed the men were in stable condition.

The victims told investigators they had collectively taken a “bump” of a substance they believed to be cocaine in the bar’s bathroom. One of the men had reportedly purchased the substance earlier that evening.

The men reported feeling “bad” almost immediately after ingestion. Realizing the substance was not what they expected, they told police they discarded the remainder of the drug. Because the evidence was disposed of before officers arrived, the BPD was unable to recover or test the substance to determine if it was laced with lethal additives like fentanyl.

In a move reflecting public health priorities over criminal prosecution in medical emergencies, BPD stated that none of the five men will face criminal charges related to the ingestion of the drugs.

This decision aligns with “Good Samaritan” principles often utilized by law enforcement to encourage individuals to call 911 during overdoses without fear of immediate arrest. The investigation into the source of the substance is ongoing.

The incident comes at a time when Monroe County health advocates have been sounding the alarm on the “Russian Roulette” nature of street drugs.

“Opioid deaths and accidental poisonings remain a critical concern in our community,” noted recent local health reports.

While the specific makeup of the drug in the Kilroy’s incident remains unknown, health officials continue to urge the public to utilize local resources, such as free Naloxone (Narcan) distribution sites, as the prevalence of synthetic opioids in non-opioid drugs continues to rise across Indiana.
