Indiana DNR offers Free Annual State Park Passes to foster families

INDIANA In an effort to support those providing critical care to children in the state’s foster system, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering free annual entrance passes to qualified foster families.

The initiative is designed to remove financial barriers for families, allowing them to enjoy Indiana’s 32 state parks and reservoirs without paying the standard gate fees.

The program aims to provide foster parents and children with a natural environment to bond, exercise, and find respite.

Brandt Baughman, Director of Indiana State Parks

“Indiana State Parks are a great place for families to make memories and come closer together,” said Brandt Baughman, director of Indiana State Parks. “We’re proud to offer free passes to foster families to help them come together and explore our state parks across Indiana.”

How to Apply for Your Pass

The application process is straightforward, requiring families to complete a brief verification form.

  1. Access the Form: Visit the Indiana DNR Rates and Fees page and scroll to the bottom of the section.
  2. Complete the Document: If you experience issues with the digital form, it is recommended to download and open it using Adobe Acrobat Reader for full functionality.
  3. Submit: Once filled out, email the completed form to PermitApplication@dnr.IN.gov.

The annual pass provides unlimited admission for the calendar year to all Indiana State Park properties. This includes popular destinations like Spring Mill, Clifty Falls, and Indiana Dunes.

  • Vehicle Access: The pass covers the entrance fee for the vehicle and everyone inside it.
  • Duration: The pass is valid for the current 2026 season.
  • Excluded Fees: While the entrance is free, the pass does not cover secondary costs such as camping fees, inn stays, boat launch permits, or guided cave tours.

The move is part of a broader push to acknowledge the contributions of Indiana’s foster parents. Currently, there are thousands of children in the Indiana foster care system, and providing access to outdoor recreation is seen as a vital tool for mental and physical well-being.
