Indiana DNR deploys 52,000 trout statewide for 2026 season

INDIANA — The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has launched its 2026 trout stocking campaign, releasing nearly 52,000 fish across 37 bodies of water spanning 22 counties. This massive effort is designed to prepare the state’s waterways for the official opening of the inland stream trout season this Saturday, April 25.

The spring stocking focuses on two primary species: high-energy Rainbow Trout and prized Brown Trout. All fish originate from the Curtis Creek Trout Rearing Station in LaGrange County, where they are raised to an average catchable length of 11 inches.

The DNR’s strategy ensures opportunities for both urban anglers and those seeking a remote wilderness experience.

  • Rainbow Trout: Over 20,850 have been released into inland streams leading up to opening day.
  • Brown Trout: More than 11,000 are scheduled for release in early May, primarily targeting northern lakes and select southern tailwaters.
  • Locations: Key stocking sites include the Brookville Tailwater, urban ponds in Marion and Allen counties, and the Oliver, Olin, and Martin lake chains.

To ensure a sustainable fishery, the DNR has strict regulations in place for the 2026 season. Anglers should be mindful of specific size restrictions designed to protect trophy-sized Brown Trout.

Tips for a Successful Catch

DNR biologists suggest that while trout will strike at artificial spinners and flies, natural baits are often the most effective for stocked fish. Consider using:

  • Worms or nightcrawlers
  • Bee moths
  • Salmon eggs

License Requirements

Fishing for trout in Indiana requires more than a standard permit. Anglers age 18 and older must possess:

  1. A valid 2026 Indiana Fishing License.
  2. A Trout/Salmon Stamp.

Both can be purchased instantly via the Indiana DNR’s online portal.
