BEDFORD— A Bedford man was taken into custody on Saturday afternoon following a domestic dispute that reportedly escalated into physical violence at a residence on Louie Smith Road.
Jerry W. Bowles, 69, was arrested by Lawrence County Police on a preliminary charge of domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor, following an investigation led by Sgt. R. Compton.

According to court documents, Lawrence County Central Dispatch received a third-party call at approximately 1:48 p.m. on April 18, 2026. The female caller reported that Bowles had allegedly struck his wife with a suitcase during an altercation.
Upon arriving at the scene, Sgt. Compton and assisting officers found the victim visibly distressed. She reported that the conflict began after the couple returned from a trip to French Lick. According to the victim’s statement averbal argument began in the living room regarding the victim’s cell phone usage.
In an attempt to de-escalate, the victim moved to the bedroom to lie down.
Bowles allegedly followed her into the bedroom with a large suitcase, which he then “slammed” onto the foot of the bed, striking the victim’s foot and causing pain.
Following the alleged battery, Bowles reportedly left the residence in a 2019 Ford Escape, taking the couple’s registered service dog, “Freckles,” with him.
Through continued text communication with the victim, Bowles revealed his location at Williams Dam. Sgt. Compton located the suspect vehicle in the 7500 block of State Road 450 and initiated a traffic stop. During the stop, Bowles informed officers of a revolver located on the passenger seat; he was secured without incident, and a pocket knife was removed from his person.
After being advised of his Miranda rights, Bowles reportedly told officers he had been struggling emotionally with the recent passing of a co-worker. While he acknowledged a “verbal exchange of unpleasant words,” he claimed he could not recall whether he had struck the victim with the suitcase, noting he only became aware of the allegation via text message.
While the victim signed a battery affidavit and chose to pursue criminal charges for the physical altercation, she declined to pursue charges regarding the temporary removal of the service animal.
The vehicle and the dog were turned over to a third party at the scene of the traffic stop. Bowles was arrested on-site and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
