BEDFORD – Fourth-grade students, educators, and Lawrence County residents benefit from a unique, collaborative educational project that brings local history to life while fostering literacy, creativity, and community pride. This was shared at the Bedford Chamber’s Business After Hours event on April 16, 2026.

The current YouTube video of the 2024 publication shares the same title, Mazie’s & Lawren’s Amazing Adventure in the Limestone Capital of the World, and emphasizes service, education, and exploration. This initiative highlights nine significant historical sites throughout Lawrence County, as experienced through the imaginative journey of two original characters, Mazie the Mastodon and Lawren the Bison.
The impact of this work is multifaceted. Fourth-grade students’ history curriculum focuses on Indiana, and this work provides an engaging learning experience that will deepen their understanding of local history and encourage reading comprehension.
Educators, along with the 2024 published book, will be able to use this video with meaningful, locally relevant instructional resources to enhance classroom learning. Additionally, the public will benefit from increased awareness and appreciation of the county’s historical landmarks and shared heritage.
This project also fulfills an important humanitarian need by supporting early literacy and educational enrichment. By creating accessible, engaging content, this work helps foster a sense of belonging, curiosity, and self-worth- key elements in student success and long- term community engagement.
Rotarians played a vital role in bringing this project to life. Contributions included creative insight from the entire Bedford Rotary Club during development and story drafting; Rotarian and celebrated author James Lee Hutchinson designed the original character illustrations; Lawrence County Museum President and Rotarian Rowena Cross-Najafi, along with others, ensured historical accuracy; and Rotarian Darryl Ivanson served as the narrator. This involvement reflects
Rotary’s ongoing commitment to education, storytelling, and service above self.
The Bedford North Lawrence Career Center’s Media Arts class, under the leadership of instructor Aaron Harrell, produced the YouTube video. Students applied their technical and creative skills to develop the project’s digital components, gaining real-world experience while supporting this significant effort.
The event held by the Chamber recognized collaborative efforts by students, educators, Rotarians, community partners, and Rotary District 6580 funding, which made this project possible.
This YouTube video stands as a powerful example of how education, creativity, and community partnerships can inspire young learners, strengthen connections, and honor local history.
The Bedford Rotary Club would like to thank all who supported this effort that highlights the importance
of Lawrence County through this historical fiction work.
