BEDFORD — A local man is behind bars following a violent domestic dispute on Peerless Road that involved allegations of physical assault, illegal confinement, and a struggle with law enforcement.
George Haynes, 55, of Bedford, was arrested Monday, April 13, 2026, after Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a physical altercation between a husband and wife.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Sgt. Whitney Daugherty, the victim, reported that the conflict began when Haynes accused her of cheating and demanded the passcode to her phone. When she refused, Haynes allegedly prevented her from leaving the residence.
The victim told officers that Haynes locked the door and tied a rope around the door handle to keep her inside. During the confinement, she alleged that Haynes poked her in the face near her nose and struck her with an open hand, resulting in visible swelling and bruising. She further stated that Haynes pressed her own phone against her neck while demanding her passcode.
The situation escalated when the couple’s son returned to the residence. The victim reported that she screamed for help while Haynes was on the phone with their son. When the son arrived, he reportedly found the door locked and had to punch a hole through a screen door to gain entry.
A physical fight then ensued between the father and son outside the residence. When the victim informed them that she had called the police, George Haynes allegedly fled the scene on foot.
Sgt. Daugherty, along with Captain Fleetwood and Officer Pruett, arrived to find the victim with multiple facial injuries. While searching the property, Sgt. Daugherty located Haynes hiding behind a pickup truck.
Police reported that Haynes became belligerent during the arrest. According to the affidavit, Haynes allegedly refused to tell his side of the story over the phone before his capture, calling an officer a “lying little bitch.”
After being handcuffed, Haynes reportedly pulled away from officers and acted belligerently.
While being escorted to a patrol vehicle, Haynes allegedly swung his arm forward and pulled an officer, forcing deputies to assist him to the ground to maintain control.
The victim was transported by EMS to IU Health Bedford Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Haynes was also checked by EMS for a bloody nose sustained during the fight with his son before being cleared for transport to the Lawrence County Jail on charges of domestic battery with a prior conviction, domestic battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, criminal confinement, and resisting law enforcement.
The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that body camera footage from multiple officers has been preserved as evidence.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the probable cause affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
