BEDFORD – The White River Forestry Committee Wildflower Hike is scheduled for Saturday, April 11th, at Mike and Nancy Schershel’s property located on Coxton Road west of Bedford. The area may be one of the best wildflower areas in the county, according to Carroll Ritter, who organizes the wildflower hikes each year.

Ritter said this property is a family farm and woodland with an exceptional variety and abundance of spring wildflowers. It is known for the abundance of Virginia bluebells and blue-eyed Marys, as well as other spring ephemerals. Ritter will lead the hike, but others will be along to answer questions and identify flowers if the group gets spread out.

There is a $10 fee for adults who attend the wildflower hike. Light refreshments will be provided. Any funds raised above costs will support other educational efforts of the White River Forestry Committee.
There will be two hikes offered on April 11. One is from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and another is from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Since the hikes are always popular, and only a limited number of people can effectively participate in each hike, Ritter said pre-registration is required. We also ask for payment at the time of registration to confirm your place on the hike.

To register, contact Amanda or Stephanie at the Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District Office. Call 812-279-8117, ext 3. Let them know which hike time you wish to sign up for, and they will tell you where to send your payment.
You are welcome to bring your own lunch and picnic at the site. Please arrive early so the hikes can leave on time. All the hike leaders are well-versed in spring ephemeral wildflowers, trees, vines, invasives, and other plants, so we think there will be a lot to learn if you have questions.
Hopes are for a sunny day, but the event will be conducted even in light rain, but will be canceled if severe weather approaches.
The terrain is rolling hills, and though the trails or farm roads are not steep, participants should wear sturdy shoes.
In previous years, the hikes have often filled up, so make your reservations early.
