BEDFORD — Members of the Bedford Altrusa Club gathered on March 9 at the Southland Church of Christ for their monthly meeting, focusing on local scholarships, community outreach, and upcoming spring events.
Vice President Tammy Harrell called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m., beginning an evening dedicated to reviewing the club’s impact on the Lawrence County area.

The meeting highlighted several of the club’s ongoing service projects. Loretta Bailey reported on the successful delivery of magazines to local nursing homes, providing reading materials to area residents.
The club also received official recognition for its charitable contributions, including thank-you notes from:
- Teena Ligman of Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services.
- Linda Smith, representing the Bedford Men’s Warming Shelter.
- Julie Bartlett and Nancy Otte Memorial Scholarships.
Education in Action
A highlight of the evening featured a presentation by Bedford Middle School (BMS) media teacher Maggi Snack. She showcased samples of student work created using a printer purchased through a grant donated by Altrusa. The demonstration provided members with a firsthand look at how their fundraising efforts are directly supporting technology and creative education in local schools.
Fannie Lee has recruited volunteers to run the popular “Flamingo Bingo” game during the Women’s Expo over the weekend, selling the remaining stock of nuts from the club’s fall fundraiser.
The club is preparing for a busy spring season, with several key dates on the horizon:
- Senior Fair and Scholarships: Members discussed logistics for the upcoming Senior Fair and the continued administration of the NL Scholarship.
- District 6 Conference: Mary Barnes and Sara Kern were announced as the delegates who will represent the Bedford chapter at the Altrusa District 6 Conference in Springfield, Illinois, this April.
