City of Mitchell announces cash payment rounding due to penny shortage

MITCHELL – The City of Mitchell has issued a notice to customers paying their water bills with cash regarding a temporary penny shortage. Due to the national coin shortage, cash payments will be rounded to the nearest nickel when exact change is unavailable. Any difference created by the rounding will not be kept by the city and will instead be credited to the customer’s account on their next monthly bill.

For example, a bill totaling $61.82 would be rounded to $61.85 at the time of payment, with the extra three cents credited back on the following bill. City officials say the adjustment is intended to ensure transactions can continue smoothly while minimizing inconvenience to customers. Residents with questions about billing or payment options are encouraged to contact the City of Mitchell Water Department directly.
