BLOOMINGTON — For those who believe the best adventures happen when you leave the trail behind, Monroe Lake has announced the return of its popular Wander Series. These guided, off-trail excursions invite hikers to explore the back country and “normally off-limits” areas of the reservoir during the quiet beauty of the winter season.

Unlike traditional guided tours, the Wander Series embraces the unknown. There is no predetermined route; instead, a park naturalist selects a starting point and a general direction, leading the group on a collaborative exploration of the landscape.
The hikes are designed for those who enjoy the freedom of “wandering without a destination” and the camaraderie of shared learning. Participants should be prepared for:
- Duration: Approximately two hours (though some sessions may run longer).
- Terrain: Potentially rugged, off-trail conditions.
- Preparation: Hikers are encouraged to dress in layers for the winter weather and wear sturdy footwear.
The winter sessions will explore several distinct areas around the lake:
- Monday, Feb. 9 at 1:00 p.m.: Cutright East (Cutright SRA)
- Monday, Feb. 23 at 1:00 p.m.: Cutright West (Cutright SRA)
- Friday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m.: Combs Road (Norman)
While the Winter Wander Hikes are FREE, participation is strictly limited to 20 people per session to ensure a high-quality experience and minimal environmental impact. The series is recommended for ages 12 through adult.
Advance registration is required. Once signed up, participants will receive an email at least one day prior to the hike containing driving directions to the exact meeting location and final details.
Interested hikers can secure their spot or join the waiting list by visiting the official Monroe Lake registration portal.
