BLOOMINGTON— Bloomington’s most enchanting holiday tradition, the Canopy of Lights, has received national recognition, landing a nomination for USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Award for Best Public Holiday Lights Display. Now, the community is being called upon to light up the leaderboard and bring home the coveted title.

Every winter, thousands gather on the Monroe County Courthouse Square to celebrate this beloved local spectacle. The moment—when Santa flips the switch—transforms the downtown area into a sparkling winter wonderland beneath a million twinkling bulbs.
This tradition is more than lights—it’s a moment that captures the heart of Bloomington: warmth, connection, and pure small-town wonder.
The Canopy of Lights is up against 19 other national competitors, including famous displays like the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and the Circle of Lights in Indianapolis.
The public voting is crucial for securing the national title and putting Bloomington’s display on the national map.
- When to Vote: Voting is open now and runs through Monday, December 9.
- How to Vote: Residents and fans can vote once per day on every device to boost the Canopy’s standing.
While the lights shine brightly every night throughout the season, the official kick-off ceremony is set for Friday, November 28, the day after Thanksgiving.
The celebratory evening will feature:
- A special lighting ceremony in which Santa himself illuminates downtown.
- Musical performances from local groups.
- Family activities around the square.
- Free parking downtown, courtesy of the City of Bloomington, makes it easy for families to attend.
Each vote is a click that helps shine a national light on Bloomington’s cherished holiday magic.
