Run for Hope 5K aims to lift women and children out of homelessness

BEDFORD — Thanksgiving morning will begin with more than a race for many Lawrence County families this year. It will begin with compassion.

Becky’s Place will host its annual Run for Hope 5K on Thursday, Nov. 27, offering residents a way to start the holiday with purpose while supporting women and children who have no place to call home. The family-friendly walk-run begins at 9 a.m. at The Depot, 1401 J Street, in downtown Bedford.

Organizers say the event is about far more than fitness. For the women and children at Becky’s Place, it represents meals, warmth, safety, and the chance to rebuild their lives.

This year, the stakes — and the hope — are even higher. An anonymous foundation has pledged a $25,000 matching grant, doubling every dollar raised through the 5K.

All proceeds support Becky’s Place, which provides shelter, meals, case management, life-skills education, and long-term support for women and children escaping homelessness and/or abusive relationships. Staff describe the shelter as a home-like environment where residents can rest, heal, and work toward long-term stability.

Many arrive with nothing more than the clothes they’re wearing. Becky’s Place gives them food, guidance, encouragement, and the tools needed to secure permanent housing, employment, and independence. Every resident creates a life plan with a case manager and commits to employment, financial savings, and maintaining sobriety.

Race participants will receive finisher medals, with optional race shirts available for $5. The run will be professionally timed by ABTiming, with awards for several age divisions: 17 and under, 18–29, 30–44, 45–59, and 60+.

Community members who cannot attend the race are encouraged to support Becky’s Place through financial gifts, material donations, volunteer work, or prayer. Becky’s Place also accepts planned gifts, including stock, IRA contributions, donor-advised funds, and legacy gifts.

For many families served by Becky’s Place, support from events like the Run for Hope is what allows them to sit at a dinner table, sleep in a warm bed, or take their first steps toward independence.
