Orange County Sheriff’s Department to increase holiday patrols as part of Safe Family Travel Campaign

PAOLI — With the holiday season approaching, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will increase patrols to reduce impaired and unsafe driving, partnering with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) for this year’s Safe Family Travel campaign.

The statewide enforcement effort, supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), runs from Nov. 26 through the end of December. Deputies will conduct saturation patrols focusing on impaired driving, aggressive driving, and seat belt violations.

“We see the consequences of unsafe driving every day,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director of ICJI. “By buckling up, slowing down, and never driving impaired, we can all help make Indiana’s roads safer this season.”

Holiday travel remains one of the most dangerous times on the road. According to NHTSA, alcohol-impaired driving is a leading factor in fatal crashes during November and December. Seat belt non-use also remains one of the most preventable causes of roadway deaths.

“Our deputies will be out to protect the community, but we need your help,” said Sheriff Davy Hederson. “Be responsible, make smart decisions, and look out for one another this season.”

Residents are encouraged to call 911 immediately if they witness unsafe or impaired driving.
