BLOOMINGTON — The crockpots are warming and the pepper dehydrators are humming—Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard (MHC) is firing up preparations for its annual “Chilly” Cook-Off, launching Freezefest on Friday, January 23, at the Switchyard Pavilion, 1601 S. Rogers St. The evening fundraiser is a spicy celebration of community and food security, and MHC is calling on local businesses, chili cooks, and families to jump in.
Local companies can help make the event possible—and visible—by becoming event sponsors. A minimum sponsorship of $150 includes four Cook-Off tickets, the company name in event materials, logo placement on-site and on the event webpage, and cross-promotion on social media. Sponsorship commitments are due by December 19. Businesses may mail a check to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard with “Chilly Cook-Off sponsor” in the memo or donate online by selecting “Chilly Cook-Off” under “My donation is for…,” then email a logo and contact information to Megan Betz at ceo@mhcfoodpantry.org to coordinate tickets and day-of details. Questions can also be directed to 812-339-5887.

Culinary bragging rights are up for grabs, and MHC is recruiting chili teams now. Registration is free and open until Wednesday, Jan. 7 (or until slots fill). Teams can vie for People’s Choice and impress a judging panel for Best Overall, Best Vegetarian, and Most Creative. If your office potluck legend or family recipe draws a crowd, this is the moment to put it to the test.
The Cook-Off itself promises a flavorful night out. Attendees can sample 25 chilis, vote for People’s Choice, and test their mettle in the “Some Like It Hot” spicy chili-eating competition. Sweet cooldowns will be on hand from Two Sticks and Chocolate Moose. Tickets are $25 for ages 11 and up; children 10 and under are free.

Every sponsorship, entry, and ticket supports Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard’s mission to strengthen community food security—one bowl of chili at a time.
