National Prescription Drug Take Back Day set for October 25th

NATIONWIDE – The next National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is just around the corner, scheduled for Saturday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at collection sites across the country. This biannual event provides a safe, convenient, and responsible opportunity for the public to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs.

The event comes as statistics continue to highlight the critical need for proper medication disposal. A 2023 study found that more than half (53%) of participants did not know how to dispose of their old medications, while nearly three in five (58%) reported saving old medicines for future use. This practice is a significant public safety concern, as most people who misuse prescription drugs obtain them from family, friends, and acquaintances.

Making an Impact: The Scale of the Problem

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-sponsored event has become a massive effort in responsible medicine management.

  • The April 2025 Take Back Day alone collected a staggering 620,321 lbs. (310 tons) of unwanted medication.
  • This latest haul brings the total amount of prescription drugs collected by the DEA since the program began in the fall of 2010 to more than 19.8 million pounds (9,910 tons).

Proper Disposal is a Year-Round Need

While the upcoming October 25th event is a helpful reminder, the need for safe disposal is continuous. Experts urge the public to be aware of the year-round resources available to prevent medication from falling into the wrong hands.

The website MyOldMeds.com maintains a comprehensive, searchable database of over 32,000 disposal options available in communities across the country.
