Spring Mill State Park offers weekend interpretive programs

MITCHELL Visitors to Spring Mill State Park this weekend can take part in a variety of interpretive programs, from a guided tour of the Grissom Memorial to a beginner birding hike.

The weekend’s events kick off Friday, Aug. 15, with “Beginner Birding” at 9 a.m. Participants will meet at the Lakeview Activity Center for a one-hour, one-mile hike on Trail 5 to learn the basics of bird identification.

On Saturday, Aug. 16, a “Mammal March” is scheduled for 9 a.m. starting at the Lakeview Activity Center. This one-hour, moderate hike will focus on finding evidence of the park’s mammal population. Later that day at 1 p.m., a guided tour of the Grissom Memorial will provide a closer look at the life and career of astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom, with additional artifacts on display.

Sunday, Aug. 17, will feature a “Lakeside Craft” program at the Lakeview Activity Center at 12 p.m. Visitors can create a take-home craft to remember their trip.
