Learn to combat invasive plants at Otis Park walk

BEDFORD – Get ready to become a backyard hero for local woodlands. Residents are invited to a free “Invasive Plant Walk” at Otis Park on Tuesday, August 26, to learn how to identify and control invasive plant species that threaten native Indiana ecosystems.

This educational walk will take place at 6 p.m., starting from the Upper Shelter House. Participants are encouraged to follow the road to the top of the hill at the golf course to find the meeting point.

Walk alongside experts from the Hoosier National Forest and the Lawrence County SWCD. Speakers Cheryl Coon and Stephanie Baker will guide participants along the edge of the Otis Park woods, explaining how common invasive plants, many introduced through the landscaping industry, can quickly overtake natural areas.

Attendees will learn what they can do to protect local landscapes and preserve the native environments we all value. The event is a great opportunity to gain practical knowledge and make a positive impact on the health of our local forests.

Comfortable walking shoes and a bottle of water are recommended.

This event is a partnership between Purdue University, Hoosier National Forest, the Bedford Parks Department, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the USDA, and the Lawrence County Soil & Water Conservation District.

To register for the walk, RSVP by August 25 to the Bedford Parks Department at (812) 275-5692 or email Autumn Ray at aray@bedford.in.gov.
