Government modernizes donations with Venmo, PayPal option

WASHINGTON — According to it’s website, since October 2000, The Bureau of the Fiscal Service’s Pay.gov portal has offered federal agencies a secure, government-wide system for collecting funds electronically. The platform provides a range of online and offline services, allowing agencies to process payments using internet technology. Pay.gov serves as an electronic alternative for both agencies and consumers, enabling them to complete forms, make payments and submit inquiries 24 hours a day.

Now, the online portal is now allowing users to donate to pay off the national debt via Paypal and Venmo. This change was made very quietly, believed to have happened earlier in the year.

The US government has had a “Gifts to Reduce the Public Debt” program that has been bringing substantial amounts per month it’s founding according to Treasury data. This comes as President Trump’s new ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ is set to add over 3 trillion dollars to the deficit over the next decade.
