Bloomington helps fuel interest in ‘The Odyssey’ movie as IMAX tickets sell out a year in advance

BLOOMINGTON — Tickets for the upcoming IMAX release of The Odyssey have sold out nearly a year in advance at the Indiana State Museum IMAX Theater, with anticipation building statewide and particularly strong interest emerging from southern Indiana.

The film, Christopher Nolan’s sweeping adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, is set to debut in summer 2026 but has already drawn national attention for its ambitious scale, early marketing campaign, and exclusive early ticket release for IMAX locations. The Indiana State Museum’s downtown Indianapolis theater — the state’s only true IMAX 70mm screen — sold out of its initial wave of premiere tickets ahead of next year’s opening.

Local readers and educators in Lawrence and Monroe counties are helping fuel the frenzy. According to Libby, the statewide digital library app, both the eBook and audiobook editions of The Odyssey have several-week hold times across the Indiana Digital Library. Bloomington ranked 15th in the state for interest in the film, according to data on Google Trends.

The movie will be released July 17th, 2026. All IMAX tickets at the IMAX Theatre at Indiana State Museum are sold out for opening weekend, following trends worldwide.
