
SEYMOUR — The City of Seymour’s Department of Public Works is now accepting applications for a full-time MVH (Motor Vehicle Highway) Laborer, a hands-on position critical to the maintenance and improvement of city infrastructure. The role runs Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a half-hour lunch break, and includes a wide variety of responsibilities that support the city’s streets, sidewalks, public areas, and seasonal service needs.

Candidates must be able to operate various types of heavy equipment, including but not limited to dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, skid steers, zero-turn mowers, forklifts, and bucket trucks. Duties include setting and finishing concrete in accordance with ADA and legal requirements, repairing asphalt and potholes, hauling and placing stone for alley maintenance, trimming and removing city trees, and performing basic maintenance on city vehicles and equipment. The position also requires setting up safe traffic control, maintaining city buildings, and responding promptly to emergency situations such as storm damage, snow removal, and other after-hours public hazards.
This role supports citywide events like Oktoberfest, Scoop the Loop, 5K races, and other community functions. The laborer must also be able to enter and manage job details in the department’s project management software, submit timely and accurate paperwork, and support other departments when needed. The position involves physical exertion, including lifting over 50 pounds occasionally, prolonged standing, bending, crouching, and working in all weather conditions, from extreme heat to freezing temperatures.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or GED, and be fluent in English. A background in operating heavy equipment is required, while management experience and basic computer proficiency in programs like Excel, Word, and email are preferred. A valid Class B CDL is mandatory within 180 days of hire, along with a demonstrated safe driving record. Some vocational, technical, or college education is advantageous, and continuing education is encouraged.
