BEDFORD — A rally is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, at the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) office parking lot in Bedford, Indiana, located at 811 Constitution Avenue. The event aims to protest a proposed “restoration” project that could lead to logging in the Houston South and Buffalo Springs areas of the Hoosier National Forest.
Organizers are urging the public to attend and express their opposition to the plan, emphasizing what they describe as a critical “window of opportunity” to protect the forest. They contend that the proposal would result in the cutting down of Indiana’s only National Forest, impacting water resources, wildlife habitats, recreation opportunities, and the overall desirability of nearby communities.
The rally comes in the wake of a letter from Governor Mike Braun to the USFS requesting the withdrawal of the “restoration” proposal. Organizers note the significance of the governor’s stance but also highlight concerns about the Trump Administration’s directive to increase logging in National Forests nationwide. They state that the proposed project was close to approval and express alarm over ongoing burning activities in Houston South, despite a pending lawsuit challenging the logging and burning decisions.

The event is being promoted as a “colorful and festive family event,” with organizers encouraging attendees of all ages to participate. They are inviting people to bring signs expressing their support for protecting the natural world, as well as animal and forest costumes, drums, shakers, and other instruments. Speakers and songs are planned, and parking will be available for horse trailers, suggesting the possibility of equestrian participation.
The rally’s stated goal is to “make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR” to the USFS that the public desires the protection of the Hoosier National Forest and the preservation of its trees. Organizers also intend to convey a willingness to collaborate with the Forest Service to ensure the long-term protection of Buffalo Springs, Houston South, and the entire forest.
