BEDFORD – Bloomington North swept to a 5-0 victory over Bedford North Lawrence during girls high school tennis action on Friday.
The Cougars dropped only five games in the five matches.
“Bloomington North is always a great school to play,” BNL coach Ian Dillman said. “They bring their best and it makes us play our best. We just have to remember that, no matter who we play or how we did in the match, we must keep our heads up high.”
North’s Casey O’Connell topped Lauren Salzmann 6-2, 6-1 at No.1 singles, Sarah Kaviani stopped Anne Curtis 6-0, 6-0 at No.2, and Lilia McHaley handled Abby Colgan 6-0, 6-0 at No.3.
”Lauren was still at 1 singles to help us out and show off her skills,” Dillman said. “Her movement on the court has really changed with only playing two matches at singles this season. She really is showing us what she’s got. When watching the match, Lauren was more consistent from the baseline than her opponent. She was able to keep the balls deep and allowed her opponent to make the mistakes.
”On the other courts, we really struggled with moving our feet. That is our main goal now, to get feet moving on the courts. We like to hit the ball and expect a winner, or for the ball to not come back over, but that’s hardly the case.
“The ladies are really picking up on what they messed up, and they are telling me this. It’s good to hear that they are recognizing these problems so we can fix them.”
In doubles, Ally O’Guinn and Ashley Stegemoller defeated Jada Key and Bailey Guthrie 6-1, 6-0 at No.1, while Claire Hoffa and Oakley Yoder cruised past Emma Voris and Claire Edwards 6-1, 6-0 at No.2.
BNL will travel to Jeffersonville for the first round of the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament on Monday.
