BNL sweeps doubles while topping East

BNL’s Emma Voris teamed with Claire Edwards for a key win at No.2 doubles on Monday.

COLUMBUS – Bedford North Lawrence swept the doubles while edging Columbus East 3-2 during girls high school tennis action on Monday.

The Stars (3-7) also posted a crucial victory at No.3 singles while recording their first road win of the season.

“What a great feeling when you have to travel a long distance,” BNL coach Ian Dillman said. “The girls fought hard on all courts.”

Lauren Salzmann and Jada Key battled past Saya Hauser and Zoe White 6-4, 6-3 at No.1 doubles, while Emma Voris and Claire Edwards stopped Lucy Morales and Stefani Christopher 6-2, 6-0 at No.2.

“Doubles were strong,” Dillman said. “Two doubles was a bully at the net, and one doubles was forcing errors from their opponents all match. This is how we need to play moving forward.”

Laura Wires overcame an injury to clip Lilli Smith 6-4, 6-1 at No.3 singles.

“Laura was the star of the show,” Dillman said. “She was injured, she was down, then up in her set, a roller coaster of a match. She had to take a medical timeout in the second set up 4-1 with an ankle injury, but was able to secure the win.

”This team has shown great improvements over the season, from not being able to hit a ball to going to winning close matches. This team shows the fight day in and day out, even with season-ending injuries. This will be a great confidence boost.”

BNL will host Seymour on Tuesday.
