Reality Store® event to teach junior high students financial literacy

BLOOMINGTON—Organizers announced Monday that Junior high students in Bloomington will receive a hands-on lesson in personal finance at the upcoming Reality Store® event.

The program, scheduled for Friday, May 9, from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at 900 W Gordon Pike in Bloomington, will allow students to simulate the financial responsibilities of a 28-year-old starting their adult life and career.

During the Reality Store®, students will visit various stations staffed by volunteers to learn how to budget their hypothetical salaries for essential expenses such as transportation, housing, clothing, and food. The interactive exercise aims to help over 230 participating students understand the importance of budgeting and the potential impact of their academic performance on their future financial well-being.

Organizers are seeking approximately 50 volunteers to facilitate the event. Two shifts are available for volunteers: 8:00 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. (breakfast provided at 7:45 a.m.) and 11:10 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. (lunch provided from 12:10 p.m. to 12:40 p.m.).

Volunteers are required to undergo a background check by Thursday, May 1. Interested individuals should fill out the provided background check form, take a photo or copy of their driver’s license, and email both to success.school@chamberbloomington.org. Further instructions will be included in the registration confirmation email. Organizers assure that all submitted documents and information will be handled with strict confidentiality to ensure the privacy of volunteers.

The Reality Store® is designed to enlighten students and encourage them to consider the benefits of continuing their education.
