BNL turns out the lights on Lighthouse

BNL’s Bailey Guthrie hits a backhand return. The Stars conquered Lighthouse Christian for their first dual-match win of the season on Monday afternoon.

BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence recorded its first dual-match victory of the season, rolling to a 5-0 win over Lighthouse Christian during girls high school tennis action on Monday.

The Stars (1-3) dropped only 12 games in the five matches while breaking through to post the first win for first-year coach Ian Dillman.

“I’m proud of these girls,” Dillman said. “It feels nice to be on the winning side of things. I hope these girls feel the same way I do.”

BNL dominated doubles. Lauren Salzmann and Jada Key combined to cruise past Lily Hou and Sophia Dai 6-1, 6-0 at No.1, while Emma Voris and Claire Edwards knocked down Maddie England and Tabby Burlingham 6-0, 6-0 at No.2.

”Doubles was strong against their opponents,” Dillman said. “They were making calls and communicating well. Our 2 doubles kept their foot on the gas pedal and didn’t even think about the brakes. That’s the kind of mentality we need on the courts.”

In singles, Emma Conover conquered Zorah Chen 6-4, 6-1 at No.1, Laura Wires zipped past Naomi Connell 6-0, 6-0 at No.2, and Bailey Guthrie topped Lily Yang 6-4, 6-2 at No.3.

“Singles had a little different story,” Dillman said. “We are used to heavy hitters and our opponents weren’t that. It took Emma and Bailey their first set to figure out their opponent, but once they did they ran away with the match.

”Our movement today was better but still needs work. We are finally starting to see where our feet need to be and where to anticipate the next ball.”

BNL will host Loogootee on Tuesday.
