SELLERSBURG – According to Crash Davis, the star of Bull Durham, “Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they’re fascist.” Silver Creek would disagree. There’s nothing boring about winning.
Three hurlers combined for 12 strikeouts as the Dragons shut down Bedford North Lawrence 2-1 during high school baseball action on Tuesday afternoon. Silver Creek (1-1) scored twice in the fourth, and its dominant pitching made that work.
BNL’s only run came in the fifth, when Cal Gates cranked a one-out home run to right field. The Stars (1-1) managed only four hits while losing their first road game of the season.
”Proud of the effort tonight versus a sectional opponent,” BNL coach Steven McNabb said. “We definitely have to work on two-strike hitting and having a better approach at the plate in those situations.“
In the fourth, the Dragons got all of their hits. Jerron Miles stroked a one-out single, and Preston Burton followed with a single. With two outs, Hudson Garten delivered a two-run single.
BNL’s Lucas Ira suffered the hard-luck loss, working four innings. Gates struck out five in two innings of relief work.
“Lucas and Cal did everything we can ask for on the bump,” McNabb said. “Our pitchers have done an excellent job attacking hitters and giving us a chance to win.”
Silver Creek coach Ethan Leach resigned earlier on Tuesday morning.
The Stars will host Evansville Reitz on Friday.
