DUBOIS CO. – Indiana Conservation Officer Joseph Haywood, who serves Dubois County, has been selected as the 2024 District 7 Officer of the Year.

Haywood has served as a conservation officer for 21 years. He served in Knox County before transferring to Dubois County.
In addition to his regular duties as a field officer, Haywood serves in the honor guard, as a public information officer, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) search operator, National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) instructor, and field training officer, all for the Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement.
District 7 includes Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Martin, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick counties.
The district award puts Haywood in the running for the Pitzer Award, which is presented to the top overall conservation officer in the state and is selected from the 10 district winners.
The Pitzer Award is named after Conservation Officer James D. Pitzer, who was fatally shot while investigating illegal hunting activity on Jan. 2, 1961, in Jay County.
