Obituary: Max Raleigh Lane

April 5, 1937 – February 1, 2025

Max Raleigh Lane, 87, of Bedford, passed away on February 1, 2025, at Stonebridge Health Campus after a three-year illness.

He was born on April 5, 1937, to Everett and Rhoda Lane in Jackson County. Max was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and loyal friend who touched the lives of many.

Max married Barbara Sovern on February 14, 1959, and together, they shared a life filled with love until her passing on October 5, 1995. He later married Rosalie Dickey on December 10, 1998, and she survives.

Max is also survived by his son, Greg (Patti) Lane; two step-daughters, Robin Jackson (Kent Clark) and Tracy (Dell) Sheets; stepson, Ross Jackson; two grandchildren, Adam (Allie Combs) Lane, Haley (Justin) Bowersock; four step-grandchildren, Mason and Makinzie Williams, Martina and Delaney Sheets; and three great-grandchildren, Lilly, Makensie and Bryce Bowersock.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Rhoda Lane; two brothers, Everett Jr. Lane and Eugene Lane; and sister, Waneta Myers.

Max proudly served in the United States Army, enlisting in 1960 and serving in Germany as part of the Signal Corps. Upon returning home, he worked for Mitchell and Stark Construction for his entire career, retiring at 65. Max was a hardworking and dedicated man with a quiet demeanor and a strong sense of integrity. He lived by the values of an earlier generation, treating others with kindness, respect, and dignity.

He will be remembered as a gentleman with a warm heart, a man who always knew how to bring a smile to those around him with his teasing ways and good-natured humor. His family was his pride and joy, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand. Max loved the outdoors, especially camping, and he cherished the many happy times spent camping with his wife, Rosalie.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Stonebridge Health Campus for the exceptional care they provided throughout Max’s illness. Max will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Funeral Services for Max will be on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes in Bedford, with Adam Strauser and Fred Harrison officiating. Burial will follow at White River Valley Cemetery in Medora, IN. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes in Bedford.
