INDIANA – As tax season gets underway, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is making it easier for beneficiaries to replace their annual Benefit Statements, SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. The statement is essential for those who receive Social Security benefits, as it shows the total amount of benefits received in the previous year, which needs to be reported to the IRS.

If you’ve misplaced your SSA-1099 or didn’t receive it in January, you no longer have to wait on the phone or visit a Social Security office. Instead, you can quickly replace the form online through your My Social Security account.
To get a replacement:
- Log in to your My Social Security account.
- Select the “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S” link.
- Choose a year from the “Choose a year” dropdown menu (up to the past 6 years).
- Select the “Download” link to view and print your form.
A replacement for the most recent tax year will be available starting February 1. You can instantly view and print your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S. You can save the document on your computer or email it if you don’t have a printer.
You can create one quickly if you don’t have a My Social Security account. For noncitizens who received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, you’ll receive form SSA-1042S. If you live outside the U.S., you can access your replacement form by creating a personal My Social Security account with ID.me credentials. If that’s not possible, you must contact your Federal Benefits Unit.
Those without internet access or who can’t create an account can still request a replacement form using the SSA’s automated phone services. By calling 1-800-772-1213, you can order your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S, available after January 31. When prompted, say “1099” to receive assistance.
If a beneficiary passes away before the end of the year or before receiving their SSA-1099, the form will be mailed to the last address on file for use in filing any final tax return.
